How to stand up for yourself without being mean

Standing up for yourself without being mean to others involves expressing yourself in an assertive way, while still treating the other person with respect. You can start off by using “I” statements instead of making accusatory remarks to the person. For example, you could say, “I find it hurtful when you make rude comments towards me in public.”

Try to stay calm and maintain your composure when you stand up for yourself. Maintain eye contact, and try to avoid talking loudly or using aggressive body language. When you stay calm, you can set boundaries without resorting to low level mean spirted behaviour.
